Yes, the leg extension machine is the same exercise. One set per week is low volume and you will plateau quickly. Upping the volume will likely be beneficial. Squats work the quads too but you can get mechanical tension and stimulus for strength and muscle growth if you go to parallel. Managing pain can be challenging so find the exercises that allow you to increase volume without worsening your knee pain.
