While added sugar can be harmful in high doses, food has psychological and social factors as well. I get immense joy from taking my son for ice cream. Is that food healthy? No. Does it negatively impact our health? No. We eat well and are very active.
Carbohydrates are sugar. Fruit, bred, and vegetables break down into sugar. Minimizing added sugars is a great goal, but small doses is fine.
On the social side, some people cannot afford to only eat whole foods. Packaged foods are cheap and have long shelf lives. They are the only options in food deserts.
Kids often don’t have choices as they rely on their parents and schools.
The big differences with tobacco are secondhand smoke and a lack of positive health benefits. Frying food is a cooking method and I still get health benefits from the food (not fried oreos but fried chicken)
I am very concerned about the health of the US and I would love to see a reduction in added sugars and fried food as a whole. I don’t think a ban is necessary though.
