There are several potential causes. Most of the time it can be resolved conservatively. In rare cases, such as a loose body, surgery can be indicated, but conservative care should be attempted first.

Do you feel those sensations at specific positions? One option is to gradually build your tolerance to resistance activity within the symptom free range of motion. You can manipulate variables to change were you are loading weight (holding a weight infront of you, performing air squats vs. sit to stand repeatedly, changing stance width).
