There are more studies assessing meniscectomies (shaving away some of the meniscus) but even the ones looking at repairs have weak outcomes, failing to beat sham surgery or conservative care. That is the average though, some people will benefit from the surgery, depending on the type of tear and its severity. Long term studies show the surgeries tend to increase arthritis, due to the trauma of the surgery. Total knee replacements are also over utilized. They are warranted in some cases but not at the rate they are currently being performed. Surgery should be a last resort. I generally advise 3-6 months of consistent moderate to high intensity exercise to build strength and endurance prior to considering surgery. Again, surgery may be the best choice for you, and you can achieve good outcomes with them. I jsut want people to be aware that it is not necessary and many people do better with conservative care. I appreciate you sharing your experience.
