The body also uses glycogen (stored in muscle and liver) for energy in a fasted state. Your body will break down muscle as well. Fasting does not cause your body to only burn fat. The energy source and insulin levels depend on several factors, including how long you fasted and your physical activity levels, specifically resistance training.
