It is dissapointing when surgery is used as an initial treatment rather than a last resort. The body is very resilient and adaptive. Exercise, sleep, and good nutrition go a long way. The key is consistency and patience. Adaptation takes time. As you said and experienced, a little bit of exercise consistently performed goes a long way.
