I appreciate your feedback and perspective, Randy. The research around injury prevention shows there is no single causative factor for developing an injury. Injuries are typically the result of excessive workload (as you said) or insufficient recovery.
The research is pretty clear, at this time, that stretching does not prevent injuries. Warm-ups may, but they require dynamic activity to increase metabolic activity. They should also replicate the movements to be performed. Even still, warm-ups do not guarantee injuries will not occur and they are not required to prevent injuries.
Regarding types of pain, pain is a very individual experience that can occur with or without any damage/injury. I understand the concept of no pain, no gain, but the wording causes misunderstandings. Intensity and levels of discomfort, such as fatigue, are necessary to an extent, but pain is not necessary to achieve improvements in fitness.
